CHS Art by Kowena: Broken Nation

Cache High School’s front office received its very first piece of artwork since moving in a year ago! This one of a kind drawing is titled: Broken Nation and is done on cardboard using colored pencils by the talented Bryan Kowena. Bryan is a 2000 graduate of Cache High School and is currently teaching art here at CHS.

Mr. Bryan Kowena wrote:

The subject matter in this drawing depicts a Zuni elder from the Zuni Pablo tribe. When I first saw this image the first thing that came to my mind was how weathered and worn down this elder was. After taking a minute to decide what medium I wanted to use to create this piece of art I decided to use a piece of old used cardboard. I chose this piece of cardboard because to me it represented the struggles that this individual went through in his time. I titled this piece “Broken Nation”. The reason why I titled it “Broken Nation” is because of all the broken treaties that were broken by the US government at that time. This unfortunately still affects the modern-day life of this nation. Many of these tribes are still living on a reservation and are living in poverty.
